Former Firefly stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk will be reunited onscreen with proposed online comedy series, Con Man. The duo has broken multiple funding records on crowdfunding site Indiegogo, and will now see at least 11 episodes produced. Way to GO!
The CON MAN premise centers around the post-show life of Wray Nerely, (Tudyk) the pilot and co-star of SPECTRUM — a sci-fi series which was cancelled before it’s time and eventually became a cult classic with fans. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Fillion) starred in the series and has gone on to become a major celebrity. In the meantime, Wray continued to struggle to find his big break.
Wray tours the sci-fi circuit as a guest of conventions, comic book stores, and lots of pop culture events while Jack enjoys the life of an A-lister. The show will explore all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray along the way. How his characte learns to love and embrace his fans.
Con Man’s Indiegogo Campaign Exceeds Pitched Budget
Pitched on a tiny budget of $425K for three episodes, the Indiegogo campaign, launched last Wednesday, passed the $1 million mark in less than 24 hours. Since then it’s set records for highest-funded web series within 24 hours. It is currently the highest-ever funded web series on all crowdsourcing platforms.
As of right now, fans have contributed $1.6 million, with less than 28 days left before the fundraising period ends. In addition to 11-episodes now funded, confirmed guest stars include Sean Maher, Gina Torres, James Gunn, Seth Green, Felicia Day, and Amy Acker.
If the fundraiser surpasses $1.7 million, two additional episodes will be produced, one of which will be a complete episode of “Spectrum”, the in-universe cult series.
The concept for Con Man is somewhat close to what happened after the 2002 cancellation of Firefly. Fillion currently stars in ABC’s Castle which is now in its 7th season. During the same time period, Tudyk has had a less visible career as a prolific voice actor with less frequent on-camera appearances in film and television.
Who says art doesn’t imitate life.
Whatever the similarities are –Firefly fans will be happy to see that Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk are reunited at last!
Filming is set to start in June. The series will premiere on Vimeo this summer.
