This week Disney released the DVD for its animated feature, “Frozen”. So what makes this a “hot topic’? Read on …
Disney has long been making animated features. We’ve all grown up on them and continue to enjoy them. Over the past several years their goal has been to produce movies that reach a larger demographic. This four-quadrant film model – an animated feature that appeals to kids, teenagers, parents and seniors – has succeeded well at the box office. “Frozen” is no exception.
But what is it that makes “Frozen” different from any other Disney animated film?
SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t scene the film — STOP reading.
First, it is not Disney’s usual romantic love story. In fact, it isn’t even their typical animated feature. Second, it is not their tried and true fare of romantic love because it doesn’t even play the princess card in the same fashion as Disney’s prior ventures.
Sure, there’s the Princess Anna who is dying by the end of the movie BUT… when she needs to be saved by “an act of true love” … she isn’t saved by her romantic interest. She sees her fiancé, Hans, (now revealed as the true antagonist) about to kill her sister, Princess Elsa. Anna intercedes and saves Elza, only at that point saving herself from the curse. Bravo! The act of true love isn’t the kiss of a man (like we saw in Snow White) but Anna’s self-sacrifice for her sister.
“Frozen” truly breaks the mold of previous Disney princess films. The ending is no longer the typical romantic “happily ever after”. Instead, it is powerful and sends a very positive and selfless message to young girls that true love starts with family and that making choices from the heart is the best course to take in life. A solid message for today’s world – True Love involves/requires self-sacrifice.
Controversy over the film began when a grandmother posted on her blog that she believed the movie had a hidden agenda of promoting lesbian love. The odd thing about this is that even though she had a problem with “her perception of the film’s hidden agenda”, she still wrote in her blog that she took her grandchildren to see it — wait for it —
THREE times!
Then there were other rumblings on the web that the song, “Let It Go” — which stems from the theme of freedom — has additional layers to it. These bloggers believe it is a pro-gay anthem. But if this is true, where’s her love interest and if it is her sister, well … YIKES! That’s a whole other movie.
It seems that there are always people who try to project their own thoughts/feelings onto a story. I suggest, if you haven’t seen the newest gem in the Disney crown, you rent or buy the DVD and judge for yourself.
BTW — the stats on this movie are:
#1 Top Animated Movie of ALL time
#10 Top Grossing Movie of ALL time
